Phil N. Molé: “Wishes that people (by which I mean, mostly men) would stop feeling the need to bring up male circumcision every time there’s a discussion of female genital mutilation (FGM). It might seem “fair” and “equal” to you to do so, but it’s not. That’s because the two procedures are widely, signficantly different in terms of harm done, in terms of the reasons for the procedure, and in terms of the larger cultural background of FGM, which is about controlling and suppressing women. Those who want to discuss issues with male circumcision have every right to, but they should do it without hijacking discussions of a very serious women’s issue.”

Me: Important points and very true. From a legal perspective it would be important to include all unconsenting minors as clearly new laws are required with all that’s going on right now (AAP, Cornell, etc.) to protect children universally so that no form of medical treatment can be forced upon a child except when a child’s survival is at stake. As things stand and despite existing laws, kids are basically treated like cattle by medicine in general, be it vaccines, psychiatric drugs, forced chemotherapy, etc. Further, all children are produced by women, so any form of unnecessary “therapy” is a direct rejection of women. It sends the woman a message that the life she creates is imperfect and has to be perfected by an industry (still) controlled by patriarchy. It tells every mother that the medical industry has more power and wisdom than she has and that this element of patriarchy can do pretty much anything it pleases with what really is her miracle, meaning that she is worthless and powerless or in the least lower in hierarchy than patriarchy, despite the fact that it is she who creates life.
And finally, I do think that it is absolutely essential for the improvement of society and human relationships in general for males to be encouraged to identify sexually and emotionally with females, despite the initial attempt by males to turn the attention to themselves.
FGM is clitoral castration, MGM is foreskin castration, so the difference is obvious, but either way helpless, powerless children are being brutally assaulted and as with any form of rape, there is no denying of the personal violation of the individual. If men today stand up and admit this it is a sign of social advancement and courage on their part. They don’t play the role of the old fashioned stereotypical tough guy, and instead express what until recently would have been perceived as a weakness. It is a point at which the genders can come together and reject Stone Age practices. Definitely a sign of progress.
